Fast Track Knee Replacement in Hyderabad

Total knee replacement (arthroplasty) is a surgery that is performed for severe degeneration of the knee joint. Knees wear out for a variety of reasons, which include inflammation from arthritis, injury or simple wear and tear. There has been a general misconception that knee replacement surgery is very painful, involving long duration of bed rest and prolonged physiotherapy.
The Fast Track Knee replacement program is a comprehensive, evidence-based, best practice level of care focused on you. This program links all aspects of joint replacement surgery into one simple, straightforward and easy-to-understand journey. From pre-operative exercises to surgery, to rehabilitation and post replacement mobility, this program is centered around your total care and comfort.
If you need a hip or knee replacement, depending on your age and comorbidities you may be suitable for our fast-track surgery. This revolutionary new method of carrying knee replacements has seen some of our patients walk out of hospital just 48 hours after their operation when it would normally be around five to seven days.
A prospective Fast Track patient must be physically fit and have a very positive mindset. The Fast Track program requires diligence, dedication and self-discipline – since you will go home earlier than regular patients and have all of your physical therapy and recovery managed by a physical therapist in the comfort of your own home. Why get patients home sooner? Very simply, the faster patients get home, the better their peace of mind, the faster they heal, and the healthier they are.

Advantages of Fast Track Knee Replacement

  1. Pre operative counseling so patients are fully aware of the procedure and process.
  2. Early recovery and less pain due to multimodal pain management protocol consisting of nerve block, injection into the knee and cryotherapy.
  3. No ICU stay so patient gets back to the room 2 hours post surgery and will be with family. This has been a major relief to patient’s who are always apprehensive of ICU stay.
  4. Less chances of infection as patients do not go to ICU and are discharged faster than conventional knee replacement patients so the risk of hospital-acquired infection is minimized.
  5. Physiotherapy is initiated in the afternoon of surgery, and patients are made to stand and walk within 24 hours after surgery.
  6. Fast Track Knee Replacement is performed using a minimally invasive approach (MIS). It uses a smaller incision, unlike conventional total knee replacement, which requires a large incision (8 to 12 inches) and significant disruption of the muscles and tendons. MIS Knee Replacement is performed through an incision as small as 3 to 4 inches. In MIS procedures, the amount of soft tissue (muscles and tendons, etc.) that is disrupted during surgery is reduced. MIS Knee Joint Replacement is considered a giant step forward in total knee replacement for a number of reasons, which may include the following: a shorter hospital stay, a faster recovery, less pain, and much less scarring.
On the day of surgery, Fast Track patients are scheduled for one of the first two procedures in the morning. In the afternoon, they have two physical therapy sessions in their hospital room after a late lunch. In the first session, the therapist can assess a patient’s physical condition after surgery and have the patient sit up in bed and dangle their feet off the side of the bed. A few other times, the patients get out of bed and walk a few steps with a walker.
On Day 2 post-op, patients usually have a physical therapy session in the morning and evening and are then free to decide if they want to go home or stay another day.
The major gain of the program is the huge reduction in postoperative nausea and pain, which are reduced by two-thirds. This and other aspects of the Fast Track protocol help reduce surgical stress, allowing patients to safely and more quickly resume normal postoperative function.
